The policy was also more conducive to community and ensured even those who couldn’t afford a Medium membership could at least remain part of the broader platform experience. But without even a single free read per month at non-members’ disposal, it doesn’t feel as though these writers have the capacity to be true parts of the community. Before, they at least had a fighting chance.

Agreed. I used to like to use that feature with my friends--they could read my stories, then join if they wanted to. Now, they HAVE to pay to read my stories. That's one way to tell how many REAL friends you have!
