What’s in your music memorabilia collection? A writing prompt.

Sorry about the squint. I was looking directly at the sun! Selfie by author.

Time is not on my side.

Writer and music lover Anthony Overs offered up this challenge, and I took Pierce McIntyre’s lead from his April 11 answer to the prompt.

So, as usual, I’m about a month late in contributing to various writing challenges and, in this case, prompts. I’m usually in the middle of writing one story or researching for another when these opportunities come along.

OK. I’m always late at most everything.

I collect a lot of crap. If I had mentioned all of the items I collected, this article would be too long. Maybe it is already!

It was no surprise that I wound up majoring in journalism. I always loved print media and reading newspapers as a young kid. As I grew older (I mean like 12), I insisted on having magazine subscriptions to National Geographic, MAD, and Rolling Stone. F**k Boy’s Life. In my opinion, Boy Scouts were geeks, although my Dad made me be one for a couple of years.

I blame Dr. Hook and the Medicine Show and their song “The Cover of Rolling Stone” for my infatuation with the magazine. I purchased my first few issues at Jim Salzer’s Music Emporium (also a headshop) in Ventura, California, and saved them all.
