I’m not talking about springs in the sense of water. That would be crazy talk.

Sure, Albuquerque has water, what with the Rio Grande flowing through it — sometimes. Experts predict it to run dry this summer due to last year’s lackluster monsoon season, sparse winter snow, and early warm temperatures.

I’m talking about the season. You know, spring. As in April shower, bring May flower. No, that was not a typo. That’s all you might get, and it will likely be on a cactus.

This is now my third year in New Mexico’s largest city. I like Albuquerque, but I think I like New Mexico better. To many, it’s just a flyover state. However, we who live here know better.

Speaking of springs, I just swam in one and stood underneath a waterfall near Carlsbad on my way home from a trip to Texas. In the middle of the desert. Cool, clean water pouring out of an otherwise dry mountain. Here you get used to the unexpected.

To some who live here, it’s The Land of Entrapment. Albuquerque may be known as Albuquirky. Or Albuturkey. Or Albuquerque. There’s Albutwerky. But to most of us Burqueños, it’s just Burque.

Spring, along with its warmer temperatures (it snows here), brings some challenges. Here are three I’ve gotten to know well.
