why are so many people writing their headlines in all lowercase?

is this a trend i should be aware of?

There are thousands of typefaces to use if you’re a graphic designer. Medium, however, sticks with the basics, preferring that the attention be focused on the words, not the design of an article. The above typeface has many variations — it would be pretty hard to read an entire article in it. It is better suited for advertising or large display purposes. Image by marooshka on Adobe Stock.

as i was scrolling through one of my feeds last night, looking for stories to pull aside and save to read later, which i’ll probably never get to, i spotted a pattern i’d never seen before.

there were several stories where the titles were written in all lowercase.

i didn’t read any of them because my initial take was that they were being used as a gimmick, maybe to attract attention to what otherwise was just another story. (not in the eyes of that writer, of course.)

some writers might have thought that’s a great idea, and they started using this technique with their stories.

like i said, as for me, i skipped right past them.

I’ve also noted that some writers write their headlines like this sentence, with the first word capitalized and the rest in lowercase.

it seems medium editors prefer the AP style of headline writing:
